NAPANEE — Not a chance in hell.
That’s always been the generally accepted truism — that notorious schoolgirl killer Paul Bernardo will never ever see even one hour of freedom on the outside, that the chances are slim and none that the heinous lifer and dangerous offender will get any modicum of parole.
And that the 54-year-old killer and rapist will live out every one of his miserable days in solitary confinement.
It appears #Bernardo's Oct. 17 parole hearing will go ahead after he's cancelled so many times before and he's actually playing the remorse card.— Michele Mandel (@MandelSun) October 5, 2018
But as we’ve seen in the last few weeks, strange things seem to be happening in corrections — who would imagine child killer Terri-Lynne McClintic would be sent to a cushy healing lodge or serial killer nurse Elizabeth Wettlaufer would be moved out of prison to do art therapy at a psychiatric hospital?
Now Bernardo is claiming he’s sincerely remorseful and seems poised to manipulate the system in ways only a psychopath can do.
Unlike the six times he’s cancelled before, his lawyer says Bernardo plans to actually go through with his bid for parole later this month. And he won’t have to worry now about a new conviction on his record: a prison weapons charge was withdrawn Friday morning after Crown attorney Richard Floyd said there was no reasonable prospect of conviction.
Bernardo was charged in February with with possessing a homemade shank made from a pen and a screw. Wearing a blue T-shirt, the stocky, brown-haired Bernardo appeared by video link from Millhaven and politely thanked the court for withdrawing the charge against him.
“He had no knowledge of it being there. There were many opportunities for many other people to have placed it there,” defence lawyer Fergus O’Connor later told reporters.
The prosecution couldn’t prove the shank belonged to his client, he said, and he would have argued that it was planted by people in the institution who “reviled” him. There’s much to be reviled.
#Bernardo lawyer says he will go ahead with his parole hearing October 17. Says he has remorse and will express it at that time— Michele Mandel (@MandelSun) October 5, 2018
He was the Scarborough Rapist who terrorized at least 14 women. He’s responsible for the kidnapping, rape and murder of Leslie Mahaffy, 14, and Kristen French, 15, as well as the death of his 15-year-old sister-in-law Tammy Homolka.
He’s serving a life sentence and has been declared a dangerous offender. Still his lawyer believes he should be considered for parole.
“The fact is, over the last 25 years he has experienced personal growth, he has at times seemed to blamed others, seemed to be burdened down by his own guilt, but I expect that he will take full responsibility, express remorse, I can only say he appears to be sincere in that,” O’Connor said.
So Bernardo is no longer blaming the murders on his ex-wife Karla Homolka, the soccer mom released long ago after serving her sweetheart deal of 12 years imprisonment?
“He takes full responsibility,” O’Connor maintained. “He’s worked on his self-awareness, his self-improvement for the past 25 years. He’s been on good behaviour and in due course, he’ll go before the parole board and their decision will not be how much he should suffer, but does he present a risk in the future?”
Bernardo has been taking counselling, attending programs. Now the devil has even cloaked himself in remorse.
“He’s as horrified as you and I are at what he did,” his lawyer insisted.
Somehow, I think not.
O’Connor seemed to be rehearsing his arguments for the parole board when he addressed the court and thanked the Crown for doing the right thing for such a well-behaved inmate.
“My client’s determined efforts,” the lawyer said, “are not to make up for what he’s done, because that can never be done, but to improve himself in hopes of — and preparation for — his eventual return to the community to see his loving parents who have visited him and kept him in touch with their Christian values and kept them alive in him.”
God help us. Is the monster actually going to claim that he’s found the Lord?
Christian values? Why doesn't he kill himself so as to be on his way to paradise?
His parents are scumbags.
Born August 27, 1964 in Toronto, Ontario, Paul Kenneth Bernardo will go down as one of the most notorious rapists and serial killers in Canadian history. Bernardo was the result of an affair his mother had that was kept a secret until he was 16 years of age. Kenneth Bernardo, who Paul had thought was his biological father, was convicted of child molestation in 1975 and was rumoured to be the “peeping tom”of the neighbourhood. And even though he was never charged with any offences, rumours circulated that Kenneth was sexually abusing Paul’s younger sister.
Bring back the death penalty for guilty beyond any doubt evil ppl like Paul Bernardo.
